Ripple has announced its intention to obtain an Australian Financial Services License (AFSL) through the acquisition of BC Payments Australia Pty Ltd, a payments firm linked to the European Banking Circle Group. The transaction is expected to close on April 1, 2026, pending standard closing procedures.
Regulatory Clock Ticking
The move comes as Australia's financial regulator prepares to enforce updated crypto rules: from June 30, 2026, all crypto firms operating in the country must hold an AFSL to offer financial services to local customers. By locking in the acquisition now, Ripple positions itself ahead of the compliance deadline, turning regulatory pressure into a competitive lead.
Why Australia Matters
“Australia is a key market for Ripple,” said Fiona Murray, Managing Director for Asia Pacific and the Middle East. She added that the acquisition would enable Ripple Payments to “manage the full lifecycle of a transaction, from onboarding and compliance through funding, FX, liquidity management, and final payout, while integrating both traditional banking rails and digital assets.” Murray’s comment underscores Ripple’s ambition to streamline cross-border payments for enterprises—an area where fragmented settlement and high compliance costs remain major pain points.
Ripple’s sprint for licenses has been consistent. In 2025 alone, the company secured payment licenses in Singapore, the UAE, and the UK. It also received conditional approval for a national trust banking charter from the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, a rare privilege among crypto firms.
License-Fueled Growth
These regulatory endorsements have directly supported institutional adoption of the XRP ecosystem and Ripple’s flagship stablecoin, RLUSD. The company’s valuation has surged to roughly $50 billion, making it one of the world’s most valuable private companies, as previously reported by crypto.news. The BC Payments acquisition and the ensuing AFSL represent another step in Ripple’s methodical build-out of a globally compliant, regulation-first payments network.
