Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe said at TechCrunch Disrupt that the company’s future electric vehicles will be able to run AI agents built by third parties, including Anthropic. He said Rivian has already developed an internal agent framework that routes a user’s voice request to the right part of the vehicle software. More details are scheduled for the company’s "AI & Autonomy Day" event in December. Scaringe said the framework can decide whether to use a local edge model or a cloud model based on how complex a request is. He added that the agents can already connect with external apps such as Google Calendar. The next step, he said, is to integrate products from leading AI companies, though that will require coordination with the labs involved and proof that the software can operate reliably alongside safety-critical systems. He also drew a clear line around autonomy, saying control of the vehicle will not be handed over to AI agents. Rivian is not the first U.S. automaker to move in this direction. Earlier this year, Tesla added a feature that lets users talk with SpaceX’s Grok chatbot and its Grok Bot assistant.

Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe said at TechCrunch Disrupt that future Rivian electric vehicles will be able to run AI agents developed by companies including Anthropic.

Scaringe said the company has built an internal agent framework that can route a user’s voice command to the correct part of the vehicle software. Rivian plans to share more details at its "AI & Autonomy Day" event in December.

Framework switches between edge and cloud models

Scaringe said the framework can choose a local edge model or a cloud model depending on the complexity of the request. The agents can already access external applications such as Google Calendar.

He said Rivian’s next step is to integrate products from leading AI companies, while coordinating with the relevant labs and making sure the software can run reliably alongside safety-critical systems.

Vehicle control will stay out of agents’ hands

Scaringe said control of the vehicle will not be handed over to AI agents.

Rivian is not the first U.S. automaker to bring AI agents into vehicle software. Earlier this year, Tesla added a feature that allows users to talk with SpaceX’s Grok chatbot and its Grok Bot assistant.
