Solana targets the payment layer for an agentic internet
The Solana Foundation says its blockchain is being positioned as core infrastructure for an agentic internet, a model in which AI systems do more than generate content or assist users. In this framework, AI agents can initiate, coordinate, and complete economic activity on their own, creating a new class of machine-native transactions.
According to the announcement, Solana has already processed roughly 15 million on-chain AI agent payments. Most of these transactions are tied to machine-to-machine activity, suggesting that blockchain-based settlement is beginning to find practical use in automated AI workflows rather than remaining a purely theoretical concept.
Stablecoins emerge as the default payment tool
Solana also argues that stablecoins are becoming the default payment method for AI-related computing resources and services. That includes scenarios where autonomous systems need to pay for compute, data access, or other digital inputs required to complete tasks. In such settings, on-chain payments can offer automation, programmability, and global reach that traditional payment systems often struggle to match.
The ability to embed rules directly into transactions is especially important for AI agents. Payments can be triggered by predefined conditions, linked to service delivery, and executed without manual intervention. For Solana, this makes programmable settlement a key component of future AI-native commerce.
Sub-cent micropayments could reshape monetization
A central part of Solana’s thesis is that AI agents, using programmable payment features, can support sub-cent micropayments. That matters because conventional financial rails are often inefficient for very small, high-frequency transactions, while AI-driven services may depend on exactly that kind of payment flow.
If adopted at scale, this model could open new internet monetization structures, from pay-per-call AI services to real-time machine purchases of data and digital resources. Based on the Foundation’s framing, Solana is aiming to serve as the settlement and payment layer for a broader machine economy built around autonomous AI activity.
