Stanbic Bank Ghana and RD Technologies said they are working together to examine a bank-led cross-border trade settlement model supported by stablecoin technology. The initial focus is on business-to-business payments from Ghanaian companies to suppliers in Asia, with the next phase covering regulatory engagement, technical validation, and preparation for a pilot.
Under the proposed structure, Stanbic Bank Ghana would remain the customer-facing bank. It would handle onboarding and account opening, KYC reviews, transaction approvals, local-currency settlement, and related local compliance oversight. RD Technologies would provide payment technology, digital asset infrastructure, access to its Asian settlement network, and coordination for offshore settlement.
The two sides said they plan to assess how digital asset settlement infrastructure could complement existing banking services and deliver a more efficient and transparent trade payment experience within a regulated banking system. They also plan to form a project team to move forward with technical testing and the design of a controlled pilot.
