How Address Poisoning Scams Work

Address poisoning involves sending tiny amounts of worthless tokens from a wallet address that looks nearly identical to the target's legitimate address—same first and last characters but with subtle differences in the middle. Victims copying addresses from transaction history may pick the fake one by mistake, sending large funds to the scammer. Blockchain transactions are irreversible, so funds are lost permanently.

Cybersecurity firm Cyvers reports over 1 million address poisoning attempts daily on the Ethereum blockchain. Trust Wallet's internal data shows roughly 34,000 successful attacks per hour across the crypto ecosystem, indicating this scam has become a large-scale industrial operation.

How Trust Wallet's Protection Works

The new protection runs automatically inside the mobile app, supporting real-time scanning across more than 32 EVM-compatible blockchains. When a user enters or pastes a recipient address, the system checks it against a database of known malicious addresses maintained by Web3 security firm HashDit in partnership with Binance Security. If a suspicious match is found, Trust Wallet displays both addresses side by side, highlighting character differences to help users spot discrepancies. All outgoing transactions are scanned by default.

Attack Scale and Expansion Plans

Address poisoning thrives because attacks are cheap and simple. Attackers can batch-send fraudulent transactions with minimal on-chain effort, while a single successful theft can cover thousands of failed attempts. This economic incentive drives persistent scamming.

Currently the feature only covers EVM-compatible networks. Trust Wallet representatives confirmed plans to expand support to blockchains with different address structures like Solana and Tron, though no timeline has been announced. Desktop compatibility also remains pending.
