UBS Group has significantly increased its holdings in Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy), the corporate Bitcoin treasury company, according to data from BitcoinTreasuries.NET. The Swiss banking giant added approximately 3.23 million shares, bringing its total stake to about 5.76 million shares worth roughly $805 million.
UBS Adds 3.23M Strategy Shares, Stake Now Worth $805M
Strategy is known for aggressively accumulating Bitcoin through equity and convertible debt offerings. It now holds the largest corporate Bitcoin stack globally. Because its asset value is tightly correlated with Bitcoin's price, Strategy shares have become a popular "leveraged Bitcoin proxy" for institutional investors seeking indirect exposure to the cryptocurrency without holding it directly.
Bitcoin Dip Below Cost Basis Stirs Concerns
The disclosure comes amid a volatile period for crypto markets. Over the weekend, Bitcoin briefly fell below $74,600, dipping under Strategy's average purchase price of roughly $76,000 per coin. This pushed the company's Bitcoin holdings into unrealized loss territory. While Strategy has not pledged its Bitcoin as collateral (no liquidation risk), the price drop weakens the “buy-and-borrow” flywheel narrative and raises questions about whether the firm might eventually sell BTC to service debt.
Strategy's stock has fallen more than 50% over the past year, reducing its market cap to roughly $44 billion. The simultaneous decline in Bitcoin and the equity price creates a negative feedback loop that dampens investor sentiment.
Michael Saylor Stays the Course
Despite the headwinds, Strategy co-founder and Executive Chairman Michael Saylor continues to publicly champion Bitcoin's long-term value, signaling that the company will maintain its accumulation strategy. UBS's increased stake may offer a vote of confidence, but Strategy's near-term performance remains tied to Bitcoin's price trajectory and broader crypto market sentiment. Investors should note elevated volatility and assess risk tolerance carefully.
