Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin published a detailed post on X unpacking the 'Strawmap' — a long-term strawman roadmap introduced by Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake. The document maps out L1 upgrades through 2029, aiming for fast slots, fast finality, 1 gigagas per second, 1 GB/s data availability, post-quantum cryptography, and first-class privacy for ETH transfers.
Slot Time Reduction: From 12 Seconds to 2
Buterin described slot time as a tunable parameter, proposing incremental reductions using a 'sqrt(2) at a time' formula: from 12 seconds to 8, 6, 4, 3, and eventually 2 seconds, contingent on heavy research. To enable shorter slots, p2p networking improvements like erasure coding would split blocks into eight shards — any four can reconstruct the full block, cutting bandwidth overhead and latency spikes.
Validator Set Shrinks to ~256–1,024 Attesters per Slot
Instead of all validators attesting every slot, a randomly selected subset of 256 to 1,024 attesters would sign each slot. Fewer signatures eliminate the aggregation phase, saving critical milliseconds. Researchers are also integrating ePBS, FOCIL (anti-censorship), and a fast confirmation rule, tightening the safe margin from one-third to one-fifth of a slot.
Finality Drops from 16 Minutes to Seconds
Current Ethereum finality under Gasper averages ~16 minutes. The Strawmap proposes decoupling finality from slots via a one-round BFT algorithm called a Minimmit variant. End-state finality could land in the 6–16 second range. Buterin admitted 'fast finality is more complex' but noted the final protocol may be simpler than Gasper, albeit requiring invasive changes.
Post-Quantum Crypto and STARK-Friendly Hashes
The largest upgrade bundle may coincide with a cryptographic overhaul, including post-quantum hash-based signatures and a STARK-friendly hash function. Developers are evaluating responses to Poseidon2 concerns — increasing rounds, reverting to Poseidon1, or adopting BLAKE3. A notable side effect: slot-level quantum resistance could arrive before finality protection, meaning the chain might survive a quantum emergency while finality guarantees falter.
A 'Ship of Theseus' Transformation
Buterin framed the process as a component-by-component replacement, or a 'Ship of Theseus' transformation of Ethereum's slot structure and consensus. Users can expect progressive decreases in both slot time and finality time. The Strawmap is not a commitment but a coordination tool for debate, with forks roughly every six months through 2029 following Ethereum's cosmic naming tradition.
