Onchain analyst Willy Woo argues that Bitcoin developers are doing far more on quantum-computing risks than recent headlines imply. While he acknowledges that the initial response was slow, he says the pace of work accelerated notably in the second half of 2025. The first Quantum Bitcoin Summit, held in San Francisco in July, was one sign that the issue has moved beyond abstract concern into active technical planning.
Developer focus has shifted sharply
To support his case, Woo pointed to archives from the Bitcoin developers mailing list. According to the data he cited, messages related to quantum resistance have accounted for more than 10% of total discussion since June 2025, with only October and November falling below that level. He described the change as an “explosion” in technical engagement after a long stretch of near silence between 2018 and 2024.
Woo said the developer response began in January 2025 and accelerated around midyear. The main focus of debate is the vulnerability of Bitcoin’s ECDSA and Schnorr signatures to Shor’s algorithm. Some discussion threads have exceeded 100 messages, suggesting that the community is now examining possible upgrade paths in much greater depth.
Market concerns are still building
Even with stronger developer engagement, market anxiety around quantum computing has not faded. Some analysts argue that these concerns are already affecting sentiment and may be one reason Bitcoin has struggled for weeks to move above $100,000. Crypto advocate Nic Carter has said the recent price stagnation may reflect a market becoming more aware of long-term quantum risks. In his view, developers may still see the threat as distant, but institutional investors increasingly regard it as a real headwind.
The same narrative is also reaching traditional finance. Jefferies strategist Christopher Wood recently removed Bitcoin from a recommended pension portfolio, citing what he called an “existential technological threat” from quantum computing. UBS CEO Sergio Ermotti similarly said Bitcoin must overcome the quantum challenge if it is to preserve long-term credibility as a store of value.
Proactive engineering, not panic
Woo’s broader point is that the current mood among developers is not one of panic, but of proactive engineering for a distant but real threat. The emerging consensus favors voluntary transitions rather than forced protocol changes. Another key principle is to wait for the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology’s post-quantum cryptography standards to mature further before any deeper integration into Bitcoin is considered.
That makes the debate less about whether quantum computing poses a theoretical challenge, and more about whether Bitcoin’s technical community has started preparing in earnest. Based on Woo’s reading of the data, the answer is increasingly yes—and the work accelerated meaningfully throughout 2025.
