The XRP Ledger Foundation's community director, Hussein Zangana, warned validators that failing to upgrade to XRPL version 3.1.3 could disconnect their nodes from the network within days. According to Vet, just over a week after the latest release, only about 40% of validators have completed the software update. As a result, many node operators now risk amendment blocking once the network activates the update on May 27.
Why the Upgrade Is Urgent: 40% Completion Rate
Validators running outdated software will lose communication with the XRP Ledger network after activation, per details shared by Vet. XRPL automatically blocks older nodes because they cannot correctly interpret the updated rules. The amendment has already entered its two-week activation period, according to XRPScan data, giving validators limited time. Vet explained that amendment blocking exists to protect ledger accuracy, not to punish nodes. Once new rules kick in, outdated servers cannot properly validate transactions or participate in consensus. Consequently, operators of older versions may temporarily lose synchronization until they migrate.
What XRPL 3.1.3 Fixes: NFTs, Vaults, Permissions and Lending
The latest release enables a default amendment called fixCleanup3_1_3, addressing NFTs, permissioned domains, vaults, and the lending protocol. One major fix targets expired NFTokenOffer entries that previously stayed on the ledger unnecessarily — the amendment now automatically removes them during transaction processing, improving ledger efficiency. The update also strengthens protections for permissioned domains by introducing invariant checks that prevent failed transactions from incorrectly modifying those domains. Additionally, it fixes a trust line token limit issue tied to vault asset withdrawals — earlier software versions occasionally skipped that verification. These fixes reflect ongoing development activity in the XRP Ledger ecosystem, with developers continuing to expand lending, vault, and tokenized asset functionality.
Validator Coordination Intensifies Ahead of Activation
The low upgrade rate has sparked discussion across the XRP community. Validators remain critical to XRPL governance since amendments require broad consensus before activation. With only 40% of nodes upgraded and the deadline set for May 27, many validators risk temporary network isolation. The approaching deadline underscores the importance of coordination during major software transitions. Network operators now face mounting pressure to update before the amendment activates later this month.
