XRP Ledger is gearing up for two major upgrades designed to push the network beyond payments and settlement into broader DeFi territory. Hussain Zangana, known online as Vet and serving as Community Director at the XRPL Foundation, shared details on X.
Native Lending Protocol Targets On-Chain Credit
The planned lending system would allow liquidity pools and fixed-term crypto loans to operate directly on XRPL without intermediaries. Zangana said the goal is to turn XRPL into a decentralized credit hub, with XRP acting as a cross-chain liquidity bridge. “This turns XRPL into a decentralized credit ecosystem” — though the features have not yet launched publicly, the claim reflects the project's ambition.
The move aligns with growing demand for tokenized finance and on-chain lending across major blockchains. XRPL's approach is to build these capabilities at the protocol level instead of relying on external smart contract platforms, potentially reducing complexity and preserving its low-cost transaction model.
Smart Escrows: Programmability Without Sacrificing Speed
The second upgrade is Advanced Programmability, also called Smart Escrows. It aims to automate transaction conditions and locked-fund management while keeping XRPL's high throughput. The system introduces smart-contract-like logic without turning XRPL into a fully generalized chain. Developers can use it for automated payment flows, lending conditions, and programmable fund releases.
According to Zangana, XRPL already has the necessary building blocks: the Multi-Purpose Tokens standard, native AMM functionality, permissioned exchange tools, and compliance layers tied to Credentials and Permissioned Domains. These components let smart escrows be deployed without starting from scratch.
Foundation Restructuring and Ripple's Shift
The XRPL Foundation also confirmed organizational changes this week, placing more emphasis on independent validators and open-source ecosystem development. Zangana noted that Ripple is now focusing on long-term research — privacy, quantum protection, and broader programmability tools. Meanwhile, XRPL Commons handles user-facing infrastructure like secure storage and lending products.
Recent coverage from crypto.news highlighted growing institutional attention on XRPL infrastructure, including tokenization, permissioned finance, and cross-border settlement tied to XRP liquidity. The planned upgrades align with that trend.
