A Zcash-focused advocacy group has formally entered Washington’s lobbying system, adding a direct policy arm to the privacy coin’s push for representation in US digital asset debates. Pretty Good Policy for Zcash, or PGPZ, filed a lobbying registration effective Oct. 1 and listed executive director Divij Pandya as its only lobbyist. The filing names the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, along with two digital asset tax proposals, as current and expected issues the group plans to work on. PGPZ launched in June and grew out of Pretty Good Policy for Crypto, an initiative started in 2022 by Electric Coin Co. Before the new registration, the broader policy effort had already held Washington policy roundtables and organized a congressional briefing on encryption technologies in 2023. The move signals a more formal attempt by the Zcash ecosystem to engage with lawmakers as policy choices around privacy-preserving digital cash continue to take shape. PGPZ founder and ZODL chief policy and regulatory officer Paul Brigner said the aim is to ensure Zcash has serious, organized and credible policy engagement in Washington. In August, Zcash Community Grants approved $750,000 to fund the group’s first year of work.

A Zcash-focused advocacy group has registered to lobby in Washington, formalizing a new push by the privacy-oriented cryptocurrency ecosystem to shape US digital asset policy.

The lobbying registration for Pretty Good Policy for Zcash, or PGPZ, took effect on Oct. 1. The filing names executive director Divij Pandya as the group’s sole lobbyist and lists the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act and two digital asset tax proposals among its current and anticipated lobbying issues.

PGPZ launched in June

PGPZ was launched in June this year. It grew out of Pretty Good Policy for Crypto, which Electric Coin Co. started in 2022. That earlier initiative hosted policy roundtables in Washington and organized a congressional briefing on encryption technologies in 2023.

Founder says the goal is organized representation for Zcash

Paul Brigner, founder of PGPZ and chief policy and regulatory officer at ZODL, said the effort is meant to "make sure Zcash has serious, organized, and credible policy engagement in Washington."

He added: "Policymakers are making decisions that will affect whether privacy-preserving digital cash can exist, be used lawfully, and serve the public interest. PGPZ is about ensuring Zcash is understood, represented, and defended in those conversations."

$750,000 approved for the first year

In August, Zcash Community Grants approved a $750,000 grant to fund PGPZ’s first year of work.
