South Korea Reportedly Moves to Tax US Stock-Linked Perpetual Contracts at 11%

South Korea’s Ministry of Economy and Finance has decided to classify perpetual contracts tied to US equities as overseas stock derivatives and bring them under capital gains taxation, according to an exclusive report by Maeil Business Newspaper. Starting next year, gains from trading these products through overseas crypto exchanges will be taxed at 11% after an annual basic deduction of 2.5 million won. The reported rate is half the 22% tax applied to overseas spot stocks. The report said these products, traded on offshore crypto platforms such as Binance, track US stocks including Nvidia, Apple, and Tesla. Because South Korea’s Financial Services Commission has not allowed perpetual contracts, local investors can only access them through overseas exchanges. Industry data cited in the report showed that trading volume for such products across 19 global exchanges reached about $1 trillion from January to August this year. The South Korean government is also said to be planning to obtain investors’ transaction records from overseas exchanges and levy taxes based on those records. The report cited a South Korean government official, but said the finance ministry has not officially confirmed the matter.

Trezor raises optional wallet passphrase limit to 128 characters

Trezor said in an official announcement that it has increased the maximum length for optional wallet passphrases from 50 characters to 128 characters. The change requires users to update their device firmware, while older firmware versions remain capped at 50 characters. The company described a passphrase as an optional secret added on top of a wallet backup, noting that different passphrases lead to separate wallets. Trezor also pointed to a firmware flaw that affected some Coldcard devices in July, saying strong and unique passphrases helped some impacted users protect their assets and bought them time to move funds.

Kioxia shares fell sharply in Tokyo after the Japanese memory maker projected only modest growth for the October-to-December quarter. The company said revenue is expected to reach JPY 2.5 trillion, up 0.8% from the prior quarter, while operating profit is seen at JPY 1.995 trillion, largely flat sequentially. On Nov. 2, the stock closed at JPY 11,345, down 15.78%, after falling as much as roughly 17.3% intraday to JPY 11,135. That marked its lowest closing level since late April and left the stock about 70% below its June 22 intraday high of JPY 37,566 on a split-adjusted basis. Kioxia said strong data center demand should continue, but a stronger yen is expected to cut adjusted operating profit by about JPY 55 billion. The company also said supply shortages are expected to last through all of 2027, with well over half of its 2028 bit shipments already locked in under multi-year contracts.
