Para CEO Says AI Agent Payment Standards in Crypto Are Unlikely to Produce a Single Winner
Para CEO Nitya Subramanian says the race to define how AI agents make payments in crypto is not heading toward a winner-take-all outcome. Speaking on Unchained, she said Coinbase’s open payment standard x402 has gained an early edge with independent developers because it has been the easiest to implement, and that simplicity has driven much of the grassroots adoption seen so far. Subramanian’s view carries weight because Para provides wallet infrastructure for many of these systems and describes itself as relatively neutral across competing payment rails. She said x402 is well suited to high-frequency stablecoin micropayments, especially pay-per-API-call activity that dominates current agent-to-agent transactions, but argued that the model does not fit every form of agentic commerce. For larger purchases, she said, rival standards may be better positioned, particularly those that build in features such as recourse and dispute handling. Her takeaway is that adoption is likely to fragment by transaction type, much like traditional payment methods serve different use cases. She also pointed to ongoing governance changes around x402, whose foundation was formed by Coinbase, Cloudflare, and Stripe and is moving under the Linux Foundation, even as Stripe supports a competing protocol.
