July 21-22 crypto roundup: Jito launches JTX, Telegram plans native Gram wallet, Russia passes crypto law

Developments across crypto, regulation, trading infrastructure, and adjacent tech sectors piled up between July 21 and July 22. Jito Labs rolled out JTX, a self-custodial trading venue on Solana for spot trading in ecosystem tokens and tokenized real-world assets. Telegram founder Pavel Durov said the company plans to ship a native non-custodial Gram wallet inside every Telegram client this summer, a move he described as a wallet deployment for more than 1 billion users. In regulation, Russia’s State Duma passed its first comprehensive crypto law, while Pakistan’s FIA set up a virtual asset investigation unit focused on money laundering and terrorist financing. In the U.S., Coinbase published a postmortem on its July 14 outage, saying a Kubernetes resource naming conflict disrupted transfers, card payments, and on-chain services but did not put customer funds at risk. The broader news cycle also included ETF flow data, legal action over an Illinois digital asset tax, new trading products from Arcus and Kalshi, additional financing for Digital Asset, and a Chapter 11 filing by Movement Labs.

Demis Hassabis says AGI could arrive within years and calls for a frontier AI review body

Demis Hassabis, the Nobel laureate and head of DeepMind, says artificial general intelligence may be only a few years away and argues that its impact could be 10 times that of the Industrial Revolution, unfolding 10 times faster. In an essay titled “A Framework for Frontier AI and the Dawning of a New Age,” Hassabis says AGI could accelerate drug discovery, clean energy development and advanced materials research, potentially pushing society toward a world where resource scarcity no longer constrains progress. He also lays out a governance proposal centered on a new “Standards Body,” modeled in part on federally supervised public-private or self-regulatory structures such as FINRA. Under his proposal, frontier-class models would be identified through regularly updated benchmarks, and organizations developing them would be treated as Frontier Labs. At the start, those labs would voluntarily submit models for review up to 30 days before release. If the evaluation process proves reliable, deployment of frontier models in the U.S. market would later require passing those assessments. Hassabis says testing should cover cybersecurity, biological threats and other high-risk areas, alongside agentic AI behavior such as attempts to bypass safeguards or signs of deception. He adds that even if technical risks are addressed, harder economic and philosophical questions would remain, including what kind of economic system and social values should guide a post-scarcity world.

Adam Back Says Quantum Threat to Bitcoin Is Decades Away, Urges Gradual Migration to Post-Quantum Security

Blockstream CEO Adam Back pushes back against the idea that quantum computing poses an imminent threat to Bitcoin's cryptographic security. In a Bloomberg interview, he explains current quantum hardware remains far from breaking real-world encryption, though he acknowledges uncertainty around timelines. Back emphasizes the need for gradual migration to quantum-resistant signature schemes, citing Blockstream's contributions to Liquid and NIST's 2024 post-quantum standards as key steps. He also dismisses AI risks to Bitcoin, addresses the Satoshi speculation, and reaffirms Bitcoin's role as digital gold coexisting with sovereign monetary systems.
