Dario Amodei pushes back on claims that Anthropic backs AI power concentration

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has publicly responded to investor Gavin Baker after Baker framed a core divide in artificial intelligence policy as a choice between concentrated, tightly regulated AI and a more open, distributed model. The exchange followed Baker’s claim, previously reported by Chain News, that trusted contacts had told him Amodei once suggested Anthropic could someday become the world’s only private company. Baker argued that even if the wording was off, the idea resonated because it appeared consistent with Amodei’s long-running warnings about AI risks, including cybersecurity, biosecurity, loss of control, and concentration of power. Baker said those dangers should lead to broader distribution of AI capabilities, not tighter concentration, and argued Amodei’s preferred regulatory path has not become the industry’s dominant direction. Amodei rejected that framing. He said treating regulation as identical to regulatory capture or centralization is a false binary, and argued well-designed rules can place heavier burdens on frontier AI labs while preserving room for smaller firms and open-weight models. He also said the deeper driver of concentration is the scaling law structure of advanced AI itself, which ties stronger models to rising demands for compute, chips, data, and capital.

Bitcoin Hits Resistance Near $66,500 While Zcash Holds Recovery After Ironwood Upgrade

Bitcoin and Zcash are sending different signals in an otherwise quiet crypto market. Bitcoin spent the week under pressure from renewed discussion around quantum-computing and AI-related risks, including CNBC host Jim Cramer saying he sold his BTC over quantum fears and a separately disclosed $130 million Coldcard wallet exploit that added a custody concern. At the same time, the Federal Reserve kept rates unchanged at 3.5% to 3.75%, leaving risk assets stuck in a wait-and-see stretch. On the charts, BTC traded between $63,820 and $64,706 and was last at $64,656, up 0.94%, but the setup still looks like a rebound attempt rather than a confirmed reversal. The token remains above its 50-day EMA near $64,200 and below its 200-day EMA near $66,500, keeping a death cross in place. RSI sits at 53.5, while ADX at 14.2 points to weak trend strength. Zcash, by contrast, had a specific catalyst. Its Ironwood upgrade, also known as network upgrade NU6.3, went live on mainnet on July 28 at block 3,428,143 and reworked the network’s privacy backbone after a code vulnerability discovered by AI had already been patched. ZEC fell on the news, then recovered. It now trades at $520.33 with a market cap of about $8.7 billion, up 2.95% on the day and more than 5% over 24 hours, while holding above both its 50-day and 200-day EMAs in a golden cross structure.

Axios says AI leaders privately fear bioweapon misuse more than anything else

An Axios report says many artificial intelligence architects and tech executives, when asked privately about the risks that worry them most, point to the same scenario: AI being used to help create a deadly pathogen that could spread quickly and quietly before authorities can stop it. The report cites a recent survey by MIT FutureTech and the University of Queensland covering 272 researchers and ranking 24 major AI risks. In the survey, the probability that advanced AI capabilities could cause a catastrophic outcome by 2030 rose above 20% if no mitigation measures were in place. The study defined such an outcome as more than 1 million deaths or $100 billion in damage. Even with safeguards, the probabilities of catastrophe and AI-enabled weapons of mass harm were each still about 12%. Axios also noted that last month, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, Microsoft AI chief Mustafa Suleyman and Meta’s Alexandr Wang signed an open letter warning about AI-driven biological weapon risks and calling for stronger protections.
