0x and Uniswap clash over v4 hook safety as debate shifts to who bears the cost of openness

A public dispute has broken out between DEX aggregator 0x and Uniswap over the security profile of Uniswap v4 Hooks. On Sept. 14, 0x said it had analyzed 84,163 v4 Hooks across six chains and found that only 19.4% were classified as safe, while 54.2% were labeled malicious and 26.4% suspicious. The firm described an attack pattern it calls "Quote Spoofing," where malicious Hooks present attractive prices during simulation but alter pricing parameters or inject hidden fees during execution, leaving users with materially worse fills. 0x said hidden charges reached as high as 18% on active pairs, and in the most extreme cases users received 50% less than quoted. Uniswap founder Hayden Adams pushed back on X, arguing that malicious Hooks are a predictable byproduct of a permissionless system rather than a design flaw unique to v4. He said users trading through Uniswap’s official API and reviewed front end would not encounter those pools, because only vetted Hooks are integrated there. Niko (@saintniko) from Uniswap’s product team made the same point. Adams’ broader argument was that routing and filtering are responsibilities for aggregators, not for the protocol itself. The exchange has turned into a larger debate over a familiar DeFi question: how much of the cost of openness should sit at the protocol layer, and how much should be absorbed by applications that sit on top of it.
