Qualcomm to Launch Long-Term Robot Investment in Japan, Opens Robot Center for Physical AI
Qualcomm announced plans to launch a long-term robot investment program in Japan, centered on a newly established Qualcomm Japan Robot Center. The company aims to build an open physical AI ecosystem with Japanese robotics, industrial automation, research and tech firms, including Fanuc, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Toyota, Sony, Panasonic, Fujitsu, NEC, NTT DOCOMO, KDDI and Preferred Networks. The initiative is designed to spur innovation and industrial upgrades in Japan's robotics, physical AI and industrial automation sectors, and to align with Japanese policy goals on labor shortages, industrial competitiveness and broader AI and robot adoption. The program spans the full lifecycle of robotics, from R&D to commercial deployment and global expansion, built on four pillars: establishing a robot R&D center, expanding the industry ecosystem, supporting global commercialization of Japanese robot companies, and backing demonstrative physical AI projects. Qualcomm said it will contribute chip platforms, technical support, development resources and its global customer and partner network to help Japanese startups, developers and research institutions accelerate innovation, with the goal of taking Japanese robot solutions from the domestic market to the world.
