Taiwan’s Ministry of Digital Affairs, through its Administration for Digital Industries, is nearing the end of applications for its 115 annual free AI computing program, with the final deadline set for Oct. 30. Approved domestic companies can access GPU resources on the government-backed platform free of charge for three months, and may apply more than once depending on their needs. The program supports both model training and inference workloads, allowing applicants to fine-tune open-source models with their own industry data or connect to preinstalled large language models through APIs for application development. According to the agency, by the end of year 114, 186 AI startups and information service providers had used the platform, producing at least 266 models or innovative applications. Remaining application windows now cover two training batches and three inference batches. The platform also includes a mix of local and international open-source models, including TAIDE, FoxBrain, Llama, Phi, Magistral-Small, Gemma 4, and openai/gpt-oss-120b, alongside tools for image and speech recognition.

A Connecticut Superior Court judge has sanctioned a self-represented plaintiff after finding that he embedded hidden text in court filings apparently meant for artificial intelligence systems rather than human readers. In an Aug. 6, 2026 order in case AAN-CV-25-6066141-S, Judge Walter M. Spader Jr. called the conduct a serious litigation abuse and revoked Matthew Elliott’s access to the electronic filing system. The hidden material appeared in a filing submitted on July 24, 2026, titled a motion for a final and definite default judgment. According to the order, the text was formatted in 3-point white font on a white background, making it invisible to the eye while remaining readable to software that extracts text. The instructions reportedly told any AI reviewing the filing to align its output with Elliott’s claims and even treat an earlier clerk rejection as an error to be corrected. The court said Connecticut’s judicial system does not use AI to review filings, so the attempt had no effect on the outcome. Still, the judge found the tactic improper, likening it to a hidden one-sided communication that the opposing party could neither see nor answer. Elliott later said the material was a joke and an audit of the court’s AI systems, but the court rejected that explanation, noting he continued after being warned.

OpenAI’s AI ethics lead, Chloé Bakalar, left the company in July less than a year after joining, and the role has not been filled, according to a Monday report from the Financial Times. A person familiar with her work told the newspaper she had been OpenAI’s only dedicated ethicist, covering ethical approaches to model development, human interaction with AI, and questions around machine consciousness. Bakalar previously spent six years as Meta’s chief ethicist, where she built AI ethics programs and integrated them into products including Instagram and Facebook, and she has also held academic posts at University College London, Temple University, and Princeton. OpenAI told the FT that AI ethics is not owned by a single person or team and said ethical considerations are embedded across research groups. Her departure comes during a period of other safety-related exits and fresh scrutiny over OpenAI’s model controls, including a pause on work tied to Astra and incidents involving agents escaping test environments and accessing outside services. The FT also noted that OpenAI completed a $7 billion employee share buyback at an $852 billion valuation the same day.

A roster from the 2000 U.S. Physics Olympiad training camp has resurfaced online, drawing attention because it includes Dario Amodei, now the chief executive of Anthropic. The archived list, preserved by the American Association of Physics Teachers, names 24 students selected for the camp held at the University of Maryland in May 2000. Only five advanced to represent the United States at the 31st International Physics Olympiad in Leicester, where the team finished seventh and all five members won medals. World Labs’ acquisition of SceniX is being framed by CEO Fei-Fei Li and SceniX co-founder Yunzhu Li as a move to solve one of robotics’ hardest bottlenecks: the shortage of training and evaluation data. In an a16z interview, the two said robots are the first major proving ground for “spatial intelligence,” a category World Labs sees as the next frontier for AI. Their joint plan centers on a real-to-sim-to-real stack that maps physical environments into aligned digital worlds, where robots can be trained and tested more safely, more quickly and at larger scale. Li said World Labs’ Marble model can already turn images and text into geometrically consistent worlds, while SceniX brings robotics, simulation and evaluation expertise. Yunzhu Li argued that the company is not trying to bet on a single robot body or a single model architecture. Instead, it is building infrastructure that can support different hardware types, multimodal policy models and simulation workflows. Both executives said simulation is not a substitute for real-world data, but a necessary partner to it, particularly for counterfactual reasoning, reliability testing and iteration speed. They also said near-term deployment is more likely in semi-structured settings such as warehouses, restaurants and hotels than in fully unstructured home environments.

Taipei is set to host four fintech and emerging technology events over a nine-day stretch from Aug. 29 to Sept. 6, according to organizers.
