Manchester United reportedly decided not to strip Bruno Fernandes of the captaincy after comments he made following a 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como. According to Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett, Fernandes is also unlikely to be disciplined by the club.
Fernandes' comments after the defeat
Fernandes said in an interview after the game: "It’s not the first time, we started on the wrong foot, and they scored very early. Not much pressure on the ball, not many good movements with the ball, not many things going our way."
He also said: "It’s a decision from the staff to not press man to man and sometimes leave space behind and try to get the ball, wait for them, but sometimes when you give space to these teams they get confidence."
When asked whether Carrick got his tactics wrong, he added: "That’s on the manager and staff to see, not me. Sometimes you have to be more brave under pressure, take the risk of pressing high and making them uncomfortable."
What Rob Dorsett reported
Dorsett posted on X: "Bruno Fernandes will not be stripped of the #mufc captaincy and is unlikely to be disciplined by the club following his criticism of the coaching staff after the defeat to Como."
He also posted: "Disappointment with comments, but wider feeling is he was voicing understandable anger at the manner of the defeat."
Carrick and Sunday's game
According to Dorsett, Michael Carrick will take charge of Manchester United's game against Bournemouth on Sunday.
Dorsett added: "Meanwhile, we’ve been told Carrick will take charge of United as usual for Sunday’s game v #Bournemouth."
He also said there are no plans beyond Manchester United's game against Bournemouth on Sunday.
Dorsett added: "But there is growing concern among club bosses about the team’s poor run of form. No plans beyond Sunday’s game."
