After Bayern Munich's 6-1 Bundesliga win over RB Leipzig on Saturday, Lothar Matthäus said the club should immediately improve Michael Olise's terms and extend his contract. Olise's current deal runs until 2029.
Call for a new deal
Matthäus said Bayern should extend Olise's contract immediately by two or three years and give him a few million more. He said: "Yes, he made a mistake in Stavanger. But did you see him at the stadium on Saturday? He was on the receiving end of three or four hard challenges in the first half and didn't even wave his arms in frustration. Lesson learned, I'd say."
Stavanger sending-off
GOAL reported that Michael Olise made an "incredibly stupid" mistake against Viking Stavanger in the Champions League, when he allowed himself to be provoked and was sent off. GOAL reported that Bayern then let victory slip away in a 3-3 draw in Norway after Olise was sent off.
Maradona comparison
GOAL reported that Matthäus was comparing Bayern's Olise with Diego Maradona. Matthäus said: "A Diego Maradona couldn't be stopped by fair means either."
Salary discussion
GOAL reported that Olise's salary is around €13.5 million a year. GOAL reported that Bayern had wanted to extend Olise's contract before the World Cup. GOAL reported that Bayern have stepped up their efforts again recently and are willing to pay around €25 million a year plus bonuses. GOAL reported that Olise sees no reason to enter contract talks yet.
Matthäus said: "Uli Hoeneß will surely say now that I don't understand numbers. And no, Bayern don't have to pay 45 million, but I would extend his contract immediately by two or three years and give him a few million more."
