Football Italia, citing La Gazzetta dello Sport, reported that Napoli and Arsenal are monitoring Monza striker Gustavo Varela. The forward has scored six goals in six Serie A appearances this season.
Scoring numbers this season
Varela has scored eight goals in seven appearances across all competitions this season. He is the league’s second-top scorer with six Serie A goals, one goal behind Frosinone striker Antonio Raimondo.
Brace against Cagliari
Varela scored a brace in Monza’s most recent Serie A match, a 4-0 win over Cagliari.
Move from Benfica and contract details
Varela joined Monza this summer from Benfica for just €2m. Football Italia says Monza beat competition from Italian clubs such as Venezia and Parma, as well as Hamburger SV and Paris FC, to sign Varela.
Varela has signed a contract with Monza until 2030. La Gazzetta dello Sport claims Benfica do not have an option to re-sign Varela, but Benfica have an option to match any future offer received by Monza for Varela and a 20% sell-on clause.
