Sampdoria appointed Luca D’Angelo as their new coach after sacking Bernardo Corradi earlier in the week. The team are bottom of the table with four points from seven games.
Appointment and contract
Giampaolo had been the frontrunner to return for a third spell after Corradi’s dismissal on Monday, but the club eventually opted for D’Angelo. Football Italia said Sampdoria overlooked Marco Giampaolo for the job. According to Sky Sport Italia, the 55-year-old was presented on Friday after signing a contract until June 2028.
Backroom staff
D’Angelo is the former Pisa and Spezia coach. He will bring former midfielder Luca Mora with him as his assistant. Attilio Lombardo, who took training in the interim, will stay on the staff.
Club situation
Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Alessandro Mignani, Fabio Caserta, Fabrizio Castori and Giuseppe Iachini were also considered. Supporters’ groups have called a protest march for 31 October. Sampdoria are the fourth Serie B club to change coach this season.
D’Angelo’s words
D’Angelo said: "It was easy to say yes to Sampdoria, it’s a historic club and a very important step in my career."
D’Angelo said: "I think so far Sampdoria have paid for the fact that they are a club that cannot be in this division. You need players with different characteristics and great personality."
D’Angelo said: "There are lads who care about the team and about Sampdoria, because they realise where they are."
