Manchester United lost 3-0 to Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday. Sky Sports News reported that there is an expectation within Manchester United that Michael Carrick will be fired following the defeat.
Senior figures in the stands
Manchester United chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Jason Wilcox watched Sunday's collapse from the stands.
Reports on possible replacements
There were reports that conversations surrounding the recruitment of a replacement for Carrick have been “accelerated.” Former Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe and recently departed Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann would appear to be the two names at the top of the shortlist.
Carrick on the scene at full time
Carrick told Match of the Day that his interaction with the crowd was not a farewell lap of Old Trafford. “No, not from me. There wasn’t a tear, just appreciation for the fans and what they’ve showed me.”
“I’ve got the energy for sure—it means so much to me. You have games to focus on and gathering the players. The responsibility of doing that I enjoy that—I love it, it’s what I’m here for.”
“I always do what I feel is going to be the best for the football club.”
What Carrick said about post-match contact
Carrick said he had not had any serious exchange with Berrada and Wilcox after the match. “No, just briefly came down like they always do after a game, but nothing out of the ordinary.”
“I’m not expecting anything. It’s just digesting today—we knew it was an important day to try and get us moving forward, and we haven’t done that. For me it’s just digesting that, and the emotions at the end of the game is something I’ve not really had before.”
“If I really had the answers, I wouldn’t have let it happen. If I could do something about it and there was something that I could really control, then I would’ve tried to do everything I can to not be in this position.”
