West Ham United confirmed on Wednesday that former midfielder Scott Parker is their new head coach on a two-and-a-half-year contract. The appointment came after Nuno Espirito Santo was sacked on Tuesday, with West Ham eighth in the Championship.
Appointment confirmed
Parker, 46, replaces Nuno Espirito Santo. He had been out of work since leaving Burnley in April.
Parker told the club website: "It is a very proud moment for me to step into this role and return to a club that means so much to me and my family."
He also said: "I feel so honoured to be the person who’s been given the opportunity to try and lead this Club back to the Premier League."
Parker's West Ham history
Parker previously played for West Ham between 2007 and 2011, making 129 appearances. He won West Ham's player of the year award three seasons in a row.
Interim chief executive Karim Virani said: "He is someone who is held in high regard at West Ham United and throughout the game, and he was the unanimous choice of the board to become our new head coach."
League position and first match
West Ham are eighth in the Championship and six points behind leaders Middlesbrough. They have won two of their past six games and lost back-to-back home matches, 3-2 to Southampton and 3-1 to West Bromwich Albion.
Parker's first game in charge is on Wednesday when West Ham travel to Cardiff City in the Championship.
Staff around Parker
Parker has led Fulham, Bournemouth and Burnley to promotion from the Championship. Parker said he has been in the division three times and got out of it three times, and said he shares that ambition.
First-team coaches Steve Potts, Gerard Prenderville and Billy Lepine will assist Parker, while Mark Noble will work closely with him in his role as sporting director. West Ham said further announcements on the backroom team will be made in the coming days and weeks.
