Amazon brings Project Kuiper constellation to 396 satellites
According to Techub, citing CryptoBriefing, Amazon launched 29 satellites into orbit on July 2 aboard a United Launch Alliance rocket. The mission raised the total number of satellites in its Project Kuiper constellation to 396, marking another step forward in the company’s effort to build a low-Earth-orbit broadband network.
While the latest batch expands the constellation, the overall rollout remains far from complete. The report states that Project Kuiper has reached only about 12% of its planned deployment so far. That means each launch now carries added operational significance, not only as a numerical increase in satellites but as part of a compressed execution timeline.
FCC requirements add urgency to the deployment schedule
Amazon is also working against a regulatory deadline. The company must have roughly half of its satellites operational by July 30 in order to satisfy requirements set by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, or FCC. This shifts attention beyond launch counts and toward activation, readiness, and service capability.
In practical terms, the challenge is no longer limited to getting hardware into orbit. Amazon must also ensure that a meaningful share of those satellites becomes operational within the required timeframe. Given the current deployment ratio, the upcoming weeks remain critical for the program’s compliance path.
Atlas V cooperation with ULA concludes as launch strategy broadens
The July 2 mission also marks the end of a specific launch chapter for Amazon. The report says this launch concludes the company’s Project Kuiper missions conducted in partnership with ULA’s Atlas V. With that phase completed, Amazon is expected to shift future launches to a broader set of providers.
Those providers include SpaceX Falcon 9, Arianespace, and Blue Origin. A multi-provider launch strategy could give Amazon greater scheduling flexibility and more avenues for scaling up deployment speed. That matters because the remaining constellation buildout is still substantial and likely requires sustained launch capacity across multiple vehicles.
More than 2,800 satellites still needed for the 2029 full-operations goal
Amazon’s stated target is to bring Project Kuiper into full operation by 2029. To get there, the company still needs to launch more than 2,800 satellites over the next three years. Relative to the current in-orbit count of 396, the remaining workload is significant both in absolute scale and in timing pressure.
The latest launch therefore represents progress, but not completion. Project Kuiper remains in an acceleration phase where launch execution, operational activation, and regulatory compliance all matter simultaneously. Based on the figures cited in the report, Amazon’s next stage will be defined by how efficiently it can turn launch commitments into an operating constellation at much greater scale.
