Blockfi, a leading crypto financial services provider, has unveiled the world's first Bitcoin rewards credit card in partnership with Visa. Announced on Tuesday, the card allows users to earn 1.5% cash back on every purchase, which is automatically converted into Bitcoin and deposited into their Blockfi account on a monthly cycle. The card is set to launch in the United States in spring 2021, with plans to expand internationally.
Key Features: Automatic Bitcoin Rewards and Signup Bonus
According to Blockfi's announcement, the Visa credit card offers a 1.5% reward rate on all transactions, with the rewards converted to Bitcoin monthly. New cardholders can also earn a $250 Bitcoin signup bonus after spending $3,000 within the first three months. The card carries an annual fee of $200.
Blockfi highlighted that this is the first credit card in the crypto ecosystem, built in collaboration with Visa, Evolve Bank & Trust, and Deserve. Users do not need to actively buy Bitcoin; instead, they passively accumulate it through everyday spending.
Competing Products and Market Context
This product is distinct from the Fold Card, another Bitcoin rewards card that operates as a Visa prepaid debit card (currently in beta). Blockfi emphasized that credit cards offer superior purchase protections, higher reward rates, and credit-building opportunities compared to debit cards, making them more attractive to consumers.
Visa’s Head of Crypto, Cuy Sheffield, tweeted: “Incredibly excited to work with Blockfi to bring to market the first Visa credit card with Bitcoin rewards.” The move signals Visa's deepening commitment to integrating cryptocurrencies into mainstream finance.
Market Implications and Future Plans
The launch of a Bitcoin rewards credit card lowers the barrier for everyday users to acquire Bitcoin without additional efforts. Analysts note that a 1.5% return rate is competitive with traditional cash-back cards, especially given Bitcoin's potential for price appreciation. However, the $200 annual fee may require frequent spenders to break even.
Blockfi plans to ship cards in spring 2021 within the US and later expand to more countries. The company did not disclose a maximum reward cap or detailed terms, but the product has already generated significant buzz in the crypto community. As the first of its kind, it could pave the way for similar offerings from other financial institutions.
In summary, this partnership between Blockfi and Visa represents a milestone in bridging traditional credit infrastructure with digital assets, offering a practical way for consumers to earn Bitcoin through routine purchases.
