CoinGecko’s cryptocurrency industry report for the third quarter of 2026 said total crypto market capitalization climbed 39.6% quarter over quarter, adding $840.1 billion to reach about $3 trillion. The move ended three straight quarters of decline and marked the biggest quarterly gain since the fourth quarter of 2024, though the market was still down 4% on a year-to-date basis. Among major assets, Ether outperformed Bitcoin and other large cryptocurrencies, rising 71% during the quarter to $2,684, while spot ETH ETFs posted $3.1 billion in net inflows. Hyperliquid’s HYPE also reached a record high of $98, with a quarterly gain of 40.5%, which the report linked to favorable U.S. regulatory developments. Trading activity, however, did not keep pace with the price rebound. Average daily crypto trading volume fell 8.6% from the previous quarter to $73.3 billion, and spot trading volume across the top 10 centralized exchanges dropped 14.2% to $1.65 trillion. Binance’s spot market share rose to 42.7% from 38.7% in the second quarter, while open interest on perpetual futures centralized exchanges increased 40.6% and moved back above $100 billion at quarter-end for the first time since Q3 2025.

Major assets led by Ether
Among large-cap cryptocurrencies, Ether (ETH) gained 71% during the quarter to $2,684, outperforming Bitcoin and other major crypto assets. The report also said spot ETH exchange-traded funds recorded $3.1 billion in net inflows during the quarter.
Hyperliquid’s HYPE climbed to a record high of $98, posting a quarterly gain of 40.5%. CoinGecko linked that move to favorable regulatory news out of the United States.
Trading activity lagged the price rebound
Price gains were not matched by stronger trading activity. Average daily trading volume across the crypto market fell 8.6% quarter over quarter to $73.3 billion. Spot trading volume on the top 10 centralized exchanges also declined 14.2% from the prior quarter to $1.65 trillion.
At the same time, Binance increased its share of the spot market to 42.7%, up from 38.7% in the second quarter. Open interest on perpetual futures centralized exchanges rose 40.6% quarter over quarter, and by the end of the quarter moved back above $100 billion for the first time since the third quarter of 2025.
