Deutsche Börse, Germany's largest exchange operator, has invested $200 million in Kraken, acquiring a 1.5% stake in the cryptocurrency exchange's parent company, Payward, at a valuation of $13.3 billion. The investment was announced as Kraken's co-CEO Arjun Sethi confirmed at the World Economic Forum in Washington that the company has secretly filed for an initial public offering (IPO).
Valuation Drop and Regulatory Reset
The current valuation marks a 33% decline from Kraken's $20 billion valuation during its $800 million funding round in November 2025. However, the regulatory environment has improved significantly for Kraken, with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) dropping its lawsuit against the exchange in March 2025, removing a major overhang before its IPO.
Strategic Focus on Tokenized Equities
The partnership centers on integrating Kraken's xStocks tokenized equities platform into Deutsche Börse's digital assets infrastructure. xStocks, which allows users to trade tokenized versions of major US stocks like Apple and Tesla, has surpassed $10 billion in cumulative trading volume. Kraken has also expanded into CME bitcoin futures trading, strengthening its institutional offerings.
IPO Timeline and Market Implications
Arjun Sethi disclosed the confidential IPO filing during a Davos panel, though no specific timeline was provided. Industry analysts view Deutsche Börse's investment as a strategic bet on Kraken's ability to bridge traditional finance and crypto. For Deutsche Börse, the stake provides exposure to tokenized securities and regulated crypto trading, aligning with its broader digital asset strategy. The deal underscores growing convergence between incumbent exchanges and crypto platforms.
