Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and founder of SpaceX, has once again confirmed his deep involvement in the cryptocurrency space. During a recent X Space discussion, the billionaire revealed that he still owns “a bunch of dogecoin” and that his aerospace company SpaceX continues to hold “a bunch of bitcoin.” The statement, made in early 2024, has reignited interest in Musk's crypto holdings and his influence on the market.
Musk's Crypto Portfolio and History
Known affectionately as the “Dogefather” within the crypto community, Musk has long been a vocal supporter of dogecoin (DOGE). His personal holdings reportedly include DOGE, bitcoin (BTC), and ether (ETH). In June 2022, he pledged to keep buying and supporting dogecoin, a promise he now confirms he has kept. The revelation that SpaceX holds a significant amount of bitcoin aligns with his past statements. Tesla, meanwhile, reported $184 million in net digital assets on its Q3 2023 balance sheet, a remnant of its original $1.5 billion bitcoin purchase in Q1 2021. Tesla sold 75% of its bitcoin holdings in Q2 2022 due to liquidity concerns related to COVID-19 lockdowns in China, though Musk noted the company remains open to increasing its crypto exposure in the future.
Despite his continued holdings, Musk admitted in December 2023 that he doesn't spend much time thinking about cryptocurrency. He has also stressed that neither Tesla nor SpaceX will create their own crypto token, despite repeated community speculation.
Dogecoin Integration and Legal Challenges
Musk's companies have embraced dogecoin as a payment method. Tesla and SpaceX accept DOGE for certain merchandise, and The Boring Company allows customers to pay for rides on its Las Vegas loop using the meme coin. Musk even joked that he would eat a Happy Meal on TV if McDonald's ever accepts dogecoin. However, not all reactions have been positive. A group of investors filed a lawsuit accusing Musk and his companies of running a “crypto pyramid scheme” via dogecoin. Musk has asked the court to dismiss the case, arguing that simply tweeting support for a cryptocurrency is not illegal.
X's Future as a Financial Super App
Beyond personal holdings, Musk's social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has obtained 12 money transmitter licenses in the United States, signaling his ambition to transform X into a comprehensive financial platform. Musk has stated that users will not need a bank account to conduct financial transactions on X, and he sees a “massive incentive” to move money out of traditional bank accounts. Many in the crypto community hope that X will eventually integrate cryptocurrency payments, further bridging the gap between digital assets and everyday finance.
Musk's latest confirmation of his dogecoin and bitcoin holdings reinforces his status as one of the most influential figures in the cryptocurrency world. While his attention may be divided, his actions—both personal and corporate—continue to shape market sentiment and adoption trends. As the regulatory landscape evolves and mainstream interest grows, Musk’s crypto journey will likely remain a key narrative.
