This week's Bitcoin.com podcast, hosted by 'Bitcoin Brian', features Dr. Jemma Green, co-founder of the distributed ledger technology firm Power Ledger. Dr. Green is also the founder of the Global Blockchain Business Council and a Forbes contributor. In the episode, she discusses how blockchain can disrupt the traditional energy sector and reveals details of the company's upcoming token sale.
From Finance to Energy: Dr. Green's Journey
Dr. Green worked for JPMorgan in 2013 before earning her Ph.D. in Energy Markets and Disruptive Innovation. She is a strong advocate of blockchain technology and believes it can democratize energy markets. Power Ledger, an Australian startup, develops software that connects to smart meters to leverage renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. Unused energy can then be sold in an open market using tokenized payments and smart contracts.
“Our mission is around the democratization of power, and we see ourselves as being a distributed ledger for distributed energy markets,” Dr. Green explained during the podcast.
ICO Success: $17 Million Raised in Pre-Sale
Power Ledger recently closed its Initial Coin Offering (ICO) pre-sale, raising $17 million. The public sale will take place later this week on September 8, where investors can purchase Power Ledger's POWR tokens. In a company statement, Dr. Green expressed enthusiasm: “Selling out in just over three days is a very strong performance in line with global ICO standards, which speaks to the strong levels of interest from consumer and institutional buyers.”
The Future of Blockchain and Energy
Throughout the episode, Dr. Green and Bitcoin Brian explored the potential of blockchain technology in the energy sector. She emphasized that distributed ledger technology can reduce transaction costs, increase transparency, and enable individual users to directly participate in energy trading, thus disrupting the current centralized power grid model.
