Argos Tool: Filling a Technical Gap in Zcash Wallets
According to ChainCatcher, Sovright, the non-profit organization succeeding Electric Coin Company's Zcash research and development, has officially launched a wallet recovery tool named 'Argos'. The tool addresses the issue of funds being stuck after the old ZEC Wallet Lite was discontinued in 2022. Michelle Lai, Executive Board Chair of Sovright, stated that as long as users still hold the seed phrase of the old wallet, Argos can help recover affected assets. Because only specific shielded addresses are involved, the exact scale of affected funds cannot be precisely calculated, but she estimated the amount is 'significant', concentrated among early long-term holders.
Michelle Lai described this issue as a long-standing 'technical pothole' in the community that, though not prominent, has been eroding user trust in Zcash. The release of Argos aims to fill this gap and improve wallet usability and infrastructure stability.
Sovright Team and Ecosystem Status
Sovright currently consists of only three core members, all from the former Bootstrap system. The team is also testing a privacy-focused Zcash mining pool designed to reduce hashrate concentration and enhance network decentralization. The organization's predecessor underwent a major governance restructuring: Electric Coin Company employees left en masse to form a new entity, Zcash Open Development Lab (ZODL), which has received support from leading institutions such as Paradigm and a16z, focusing on Zcash-related product development. Sovright emphasized that it has no adversarial relationship with ZODL and will continue to focus on solving 'long-standing legacy issues' in the Zcash ecosystem, including wallet usability and infrastructure stability.
