TRON has activated quantum-resistant signatures on its Nile testnet, with FN DSA 512 enabled in the first rollout. TRON founder Justin Sun said Proposal 20628 was approved on July 2, and developers can now use the published technical guide to validate the post-quantum signature feature in the test environment.

Testnet rollout begins after committee approval

Nile is TRON’s sandbox for trying new features before they reach the mainnet. Because testnet assets have no real market value, teams can experiment with contracts and transactions without taking on actual financial risk. What has been confirmed so far is a testnet deployment, not a mainnet transition.

The report also makes clear that this move is not tied to any immediate security emergency. No publicly available quantum computer has yet been shown to break the mainstream signature systems used across major blockchains. Even so, blockchain networks are preparing early for longer-term quantum risks.

Why FN DSA 512 is drawing attention

FN DSA 512 is a lattice-based digital signature algorithm derived from the scheme previously known as Falcon. Its structure is tied to work selected under the US National Institute of Standards and Technology, or NIST, post-quantum cryptography program. That gives it relevance for networks looking beyond traditional elliptic-curve cryptography.

Standardization is still in progress for FN DSA, with NIST working toward inclusion in FIPS 206. By contrast, the ML DSA standard has already been finalized under FIPS 204. TRON’s Nile release supports both FN DSA 512 and ML DSA 44, but Proposal 20628 only switched on FN DSA 512 at this stage.

Mainnet deployment would require broader upgrades

The testing phase is expected to show how larger signature sizes affect transaction speed, storage demands, and processing costs. That matters on a high-throughput network. The Falcon 512-based design produces signatures capped at about 667 bytes, which may help limit bandwidth and storage pressure compared with some other post-quantum options.

A move to mainnet would need support from wallet providers, exchanges, validators, and application developers. Existing users may also need a migration path to move assets into quantum-resistant accounts. TRON could also choose a hybrid period in which both classical and post-quantum signatures are accepted.

Proposal 20628 does not include a date for a mainnet release. For now, the only confirmed step is that developers have started testing the feature on the Nile testnet. After the announcement, TRX traded near $0.319 with a market capitalization of about $30.26 billion. Daily price movement remained limited, indicating the market did not treat the update as a major short-term price catalyst.
