U.S. Treasury chief says new Iran sanctions aim to cut every economic lifeline

U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent said on Aug. 24 that Washington would formally unveil the details of what he called an "unprecedented economic isolation" campaign against Iran later that day. In an article published by the Financial Times, Bessent wrote that the U.S. was entering a final phase and described the coming measures as an economic "D-Day" against Iran, calling it the largest financial offensive ever launched against a hostile power. He also warned that any country providing financial support to what he described as a "crumbling regime" should expect to face similar isolation. According to Bessent, the U.S. objective is to sever every economic lifeline sustaining the Iranian government until Tehran is left isolated. Based on signals he had previously released, Washington plans to use all available enforcement tools and impose secondary sanctions on countries and companies that continue business tied to Iran, with a focus on three areas: purchases of Iranian oil, money transfers to Iran, and ship-to-ship maritime transfers of Iranian crude. Bessent added that he does not expect further "large-scale" military action will be needed.

EU Sanctions Target Crypto Firms Facilitating Russian Oil Trades

The European Union's 21st sanctions package targets cryptocurrency operators that help facilitate Russian oil transactions, aiming to close a loophole that lets Moscow use digital assets to bypass financial restrictions on petroleum trade. The move extends digital asset regulation into energy geopolitics, exposing exchanges and over-the-counter trading desks to compliance risk if they have handled deals tied to sanctioned Russian energy. Separately, Russia's July crude output rebounded to more than 9 million barrels per day, up from roughly 8.86 million bpd in June when drone strikes had cut production. (CryptoBriefing)

Middle East Oil Trade Disrupted, Iran Proposes Yuan Settlement for Strait Passage

Oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz have nearly halted, sending WTI crude up 3.4% to $97.20/barrel. Iran is offering limited passage in exchange for yuan-denominated payments, a move that could reshape the petrodollar system. Military escalation continues, with Trump issuing a 48-hour ultimatum.
