Vitalik Revises Ethereum Roadmap, Elevating Quantum Security, Privacy and Native Rollups

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has published an updated view of his 2023 roadmap and compared it with the current "Strawmap," saying the two still overlap heavily but now differ in priority, design choices and several newly introduced areas. He said quantum security has moved up the list, while VDFs and many EVM improvement ideas have moved down. Some older proposals have also been replaced by new designs, including the shift from Verkle trees to unified BT and then PBT, as well as a move away from state expiry toward new state-type design. Buterin said the clearest change is the number of directions now present in the Strawmap that were absent from the 2023 roadmap. Those include stronger native privacy support through designs such as Keyed Nonces, Recent Roots, FOCIL-related work, Lean Privacy Pool and Wormholes; post-quantum scaling approaches using LeanSPHINCS signatures, signature aggregation and zkzk frames; protocol "leanification" to support formal verification; Blob and Gas futures mechanisms; deeper protocol-level integration of rollups; and possible long-term alternatives to the EVM, including LeanISA or RISC-V with the EVM serving as an intermediate representation layer.

Ethereum Updates Roadmap: Quantum Safety, Privacy, and AI Verification Move Up Priorities

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has updated the project's roadmap by comparing his 2023 version with the current Strawmap. The refreshed outline shows a clear shift in priorities. Quantum safety has been elevated to a top-tier concern, with plans for aggressive scaling and signature aggregation designs built for a post-quantum context. For the first time, strong privacy is treated as a first-class goal, spanning keyed nonces, recent state roots, privacy pools, and the so-called wormhole approach. The update also ties AI to formal verification, aiming to accelerate the process and slim down the specification. Recursive STARKs are set to become base infrastructure across the execution, consensus, and data layers. The roadmap also introduces new state types, native rollups, blob and gas futures, and a post-EVM design space for instruction sets such as leanISA and RISC-V. Taken together, these moves put quantum resistance, user privacy, and verification tooling at the center of Ethereum's near-term technical agenda, while preserving room for major design changes beyond the current EVM model.

China’s 2D semiconductor supply chain is taking shape, stretching from materials and equipment to processors and memory

Two-dimensional semiconductors, also known as atomically thin semiconductors, are moving beyond basic research and into pilot production, process development, and early industrial deployment. The article says global chipmakers and research groups including TSMC, Intel, Samsung, imec, and IRDS have already put 2D semiconductors on their roadmaps for the post-1 nm era, where they could serve as core building blocks in heterogeneous integration. On the manufacturing side, Yuanji Micro’s 8-inch engineering demonstration line in Pudong has gone online, accompanied by a 500 nm PDK designed to work with mainstream EDA flows. In applications, the field is no longer limited to isolated devices: China has reported 32-bit RISC-V processors based on MoS2, a multi-bit parallel microprocessor called MAGIC-1000, ultra-low-leakage transistor work tied to DRAM, and single-electron non-volatile storage results.
