Chelsea won 2-0 at Everton, but goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was taken to hospital after suffering an injury in a second-half collision with Jarrad Branthwaite. Chelsea said Martinez had successful surgery.
Injury during the second half
Martinez was stretchered off after receiving lengthy treatment following the collision. Mike Penders replaced him. Pedro Neto scored twice for Chelsea.
Hospital checks and surgery
Argentine journalist Gastón Edul wrote: "Dibu Martínez is doing well and is conscious in the hospital. The results of the head tomography and the back and neck studies came back fine."
Asked about Martinez’s condition after the match, Blues boss Xabi Alonso said: "What we know is that he left the stadium conscious and is now in hospital undergoing precautionary tests. We need to wait. Hopefully it will not be too serious, but at the moment we just have to wait."
GOAL reported that Martinez had emergency surgery on a jaw injury.
Martinez posts from hospital
Martinez posted a photo of himself wearing a hospital gown on social media on Sunday and wrote: "Thanks to everyone for the messages. The operation went well."
He also wrote: "The most important thing is that we won, and kept a clean sheet. In a few weeks we'll be back."
Penders comes on
Alonso said: "Mike has personality. He's brave and we have full trust with him. He did well when he came on."
Alonso said: "He played in the cup games and whenever he's needed. Like the other players, whenever they are needed they can perform."
