Sunderland drew 1-1 away with Lech Poznan in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday, remaining unbeaten in the competition but dropping points for the first time this season. The draw gave the Polish champions their first point of the league phase.
Fast start for Sunderland
Regis Le Bris travelled to Poland under pressure after Sunderland fell to a fourth consecutive Premier League defeat in their recent outing against Bournemouth. Tymur Tuterov opened the scoring after 78 seconds, heading home after Nilson Angulo lifted the ball across. It was Tuterov's first Sunderland goal.
First-half chances
Sunderland led at half-time. Robin Roefs made a crucial double stop shortly before Antoni Kozubal flicked the ball wide from a one-on-one opportunity. Lech Poznan goalkeeper Mateusz Lis kept out two Granit Xhaka efforts, and Malick Fofana struck the inside of the post.
Lech level after the break
Habib Diarra fired wide, and Nordi Mukiele's rising shot was tipped over by Lis. Lech substitute Leo Bengtsson equalised in the 70th minute with a low shot after the ball dropped from a deep corner. Bengtsson's goal ended Lech Poznan's wait for their first goal of the main draw.
Late saves and match award
Roefs later made a double save to keep out Walemark and Michal Gurgul. Flashscore named Nilson Angulo as its Man of the Match.
