TEAMtalk reported that Sunderland are preparing a strong renewed push to sign Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo in the January transfer window, with Newcastle United also tracking him. The move matters because TEAMtalk says Catamo remains Sunderland's top option on the right flank.
Sunderland's January plan
TEAMtalk says Sunderland made Catamo their leading target during the summer. TEAMtalk understands Sunderland have not given up on Catamo and are ready to return to the negotiating table when the transfer window reopens in January.
What happened in the summer
Sporting refused to budge on their valuation in the summer, insisting that Catamo's €60million release clause would need to be met. TEAMtalk says Sunderland were prepared to go as high as €40million for Catamo in the summer, but that was not enough to persuade Sporting to sanction his departure.
Player stance and other interest
TEAMtalk reported that Catamo was keen on the prospect of moving to England during the summer, and that desire remains unchanged. Catamo has registered three goals and four assists so far this season.
TEAMtalk says Newcastle United have also carried out work on Catamo. TEAMtalk says Everton, Leeds, Bournemouth and Brentford have watched Catamo in recent weeks.
