Liverpool academy forward Will Wright said he is aiming to get into Andoni Iraola’s first team after scoring a hat-trick against LASK in the UEFA Youth League on Wednesday. The 18-year-old has scored nine goals in eight youth-team games so far this season.
Wright sets out first-team aim
Speaking to the Liverpool media team after his three-goal haul against LASK, Wright said: "My motivation is purely to get into the first team, to get in and around training and learn off some of the likes of Isak and Hugo."
Wright is yet to feature in a Premier League matchday squad under Andoni Iraola.
Form and academy goals
Wright said: "I’ve picked up some good form at the start of the season and I have to just carry it on."
In all, he has scored 15 goals and provided seven assists in 26 appearances for Liverpool's academy.
Hat-trick and his view of his game
Wright said: "It’s my first hat-trick for the club. I’m obviously a goalscorer but I want to be a more complete player as well."
Standards and background
Wright said: "Of course, I have to just keep working hard like Lewis has, and some of the other lads like Chambo and James McConnell."
He continued: "They come back and you ask, ‘What’s it like?’ and they say everyone works hard. That’s the level we have to aim for."
Wright also said: "I like a direct striker who likes running in behind, always putting himself about, and I think that summarises me as well."
He added: "It’s the way I was brought up, playing grassroots football on pitches that have rabbit holes in them. You are taught to deal with that circumstance."
He added: "I appreciate the pitches and the facilities I work in because sometimes there can be a click of the fingers and it’s away from you."
