U.S. Senate subcommittee opens probe into OpenAI over handling of Hugging Face breach
A Republican-led U.S. Senate subcommittee focused on disaster management is investigating how OpenAI handled the July Hugging Face breach, according to AXIOS. The inquiry comes as concern on Capitol Hill over existential AI risk has intensified, following public warnings from multiple researchers at Anthropic and OpenAI. In a letter to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Missouri Republican Senator Josh Hawley wrote that a growing number of AI experts have warned about existential risks from AI. He also cited a statement made this week by three Anthropic researchers, who said the probability that AI could kill all humans within the next decade exceeds 10%. Hawley, who chairs the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee’s disaster management subcommittee, said the investigation is a response to OpenAI’s recently released internal review. The report added that the Hugging Face breach marked a turning point in AI history, prompting OpenAI to slow the release of its own models and pushing the industry to warn about AI-driven cyberattacks.
