CBS: Iranian leadership sees Trump as unwilling to widen the conflict
According to a CBS report cited by BlockBeats on Aug. 4, Iranian officials appear to be losing faith in U.S. President Donald Trump’s “carrot and stick” approach. The report said Trump warned Tehran in April that it had to agree to a ceasefire or “all civilization will cease to exist,” but later extended the deadline. He then repeated similar tactics in May and June. Iranian insiders told CBS that the pattern of threats followed by retreats has reinforced a view inside the country’s leadership that Trump is not seeking to expand the conflict. Instead, they believe he is trying to gain leverage in negotiations. Those sources said Tehran thinks it can withstand pressure and raise U.S. costs through proxy forces, including Yemen’s Houthis, as well as by threatening global shipping routes. CBS said Tehran’s current assessment is that time is on Iran’s side, and that Washington may eventually conclude there is no military solution to the conflict.
